"Give me souls, take away the rest."
Co-Founder of the FMA Institute
Don Bosco (1815–1888) was an Italian Roman Catholic priest, educator, and writer. Born in Becchi, Piedmont, Italy, he dedicated his life to the care of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youth. He founded the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) in 1859 and co-founded the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) in 1872 together with Mary Mazzarello.
Don Bosco developed the Preventive System of education—a method rooted in reason, religion, and loving kindness. He believed in treating young people with respect and joy, becoming their guide rather than their judge. His motto was "Da mihi animas, cetera tolle" (Give me souls, take away the rest).
He was canonized by Pope Pius XI on April 1, 1934, and is the patron saint of youth and of editors.
