Doctor of the Church

St. Teresa of Avila

"Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you. All things pass. God does not change."

— St. Teresa of Avila
Doctor of the Church
Saint Teresa of Ávila (1515–1582) was a Spanish mystic, Carmelite nun, and reformer of the Carmelite Order. She is one of the most significant figures in Christian mysticism and was the first woman to be named a Doctor of the Church, along with Saint Catherine of Siena, in 1970.

Known for her work "The Interior Castle," she described the soul's journey toward union with God through the metaphor of a castle with many rooms. Her spirituality of prayer, humility, and courage continues to inspire religious women across the world, including the Salesian Sisters who look to her as a model of contemplative action—deep prayer expressed in generous service.
