Our Origins
The story of how the Province of Mater Ecclesiae came to be
Year of the Lord – 2000
The Province of Mater Ecclesiae, FMA India, was officially erected on 24 February 2000, with Sr Lucy Rose Ozhukayil as its first Provincial. At the time of its erection, the newly established Province had 22 presences and 154 Sisters, serving across the North-Eastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland.
Of the 22 centres, six were located in urban settings and sixteen in rural areas. The establishment of the new Province opened wider opportunities to extend the Salesian mission, particularly among marginalized young people and women in the region.

Silver Jubilee – 2025
On 24 February 2025, the Province of Mater Ecclesiae joyfully celebrated the Silver Jubilee of its establishment, marking 25 years of God's abundant blessings and faithful guidance.
As the Province continues its journey, Mater Ecclesiae looks ahead with renewed hope and commitment, carrying forward the Salesian spirit of St John Bosco and St Mary Domenica Mazzarello and seeking to bring Christ, hope and love to the young and to those entrusted to its care.
